Once a website is live, it will take time to grow and become the sales tool or information resource you want it to be. It is important to consider these longer term goals from the start.
It is important to have some clear ideas on what you would like the site to look like when doing initial planning. Look for ideas and inspiration from other sites – possibly competitors – and try and list as many of the features you’d like as possible.
When researching rival sites or sites you like the look of, note down the bad points too. This will help to give you a firmer idea of what you’re after and make sure that the same mistakes aren’t made with your own site. Design and development can be a complicated task, involving a lot of man hours in some cases so it is extremely important to make sure you have as clear an idea of what you want the final product to be when finished.
It must also be accepted that a design for site need to be signed off in order to keep costs down and ensure a timely completion. Constant changes and alterations can be expensive and will obviously delay the launch of a site.
